9. – The 1st World Conference on the Development of Cities is held in Porto Alegre, Brazil (February 13-16, 2008)

SPIDH, CISDP and the Catalan Institute for Human Rights present the Charter-Agenda project in Latin America and emphasize the need to approach urban development from a human-rights perspective.

Main Objective:
To capture the diversity of initiatives for innovation and social transformation that have emerged in recent years, creating an atmosphere of collective reflection, discussion and presentation of experiences, enabling a more organic or systemic approach to the theme of development of cities, and therefore focusing on four major central themes:

 
The Four Major Themes:

1) Right to the City (Local Policies on Citizens’ Rights and Responsibilities);
2) Governance and Democracy in Cities (Innovative Experiences of Administration and Democratic Participation);
3) Local Development in Cities;
4) Sustainability and the City-Network.
