The Ecocity World Summit

Presentation of the Global Charter Agenda for Human Rights in the City at the Ecocity World Summit

Près de 1200 personnes sont venues de tous les coins du monde afin de discuter de différents aspects liés au développement durable en milieu urbain.

The Ecocity World Summit took place in Montréal (Canada) from the 22nd to the 26th of August. The meeting aims to reflect on the best way to build and to manage sustainable cities on environmental, social and politic issues.

On this occasion and within the conference theme Governance and Democracy, Montréal City Council organised a round table on Human Rights in the City. It’s in this context that the Global Charter Agenda for Human Rights in the City and the European Charter for the Saveguarding of Human Rights in the City were presented.

The Charter-Agenda should officially be adopted at the next UCLG World Council which will take place in Florence (Italy) from the 9th to the 11th of December so the local governments could implement and promote the Charter-Agenda in their politics.

The Montréal Deputy Mayor, Mr Gérald Tremblay defended with enthusiasm the Global Charte-Agenda for Human Rights in the City during its presentation to the members of the UCLG executive bureau at the Local and Regional Leaders World Summit in November 2010 in Mexico City. Read his speech.

Since 2006, Montréal City Council has adopted a Charter of the same type. It’s the Montréal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities.

Nantes, European Green Capital for 2013

Thus the year 2013 will be an opportunity to show that the concept of sustainable development (but also human and social) would be an empty word if it was not inspired by the human rights and didn’t implement them.
